Q&A with Jemma Thomas
Next up for the Q&A series is Jemma Thomas (aka Mummas Health Hub). Jemma, a personal trainer, is responsible for the brilliant ‘Pack of Hacks’ cards that offer daily reminders of how to fit exercise into your day. Promoting exercise not just to look good, but to feel good mentally, too.
Jemma is all about reality rather than perfection. The idea for Pack of Hacks came about because after having kids, Jemma was so busy that she couldn’t fit her old training routine into her new manic life. (We’ve all been there!)
Her solution was to stick post-it notes around the house to prompt herself to complete short exercises whatever she was doing at the time, sequences that took only a few minutes but were quite intense. The post it notes turned into a business – one that has grown and grown and now includes ‘Dad bod’ exercises too!
I love Jemma’s honesty and how down to earth she is. Sharing the highs and lows and normalising the difficulties that so many face. Most recently she opened up about adult acne as a way to own the problem and help others too.
Exercise is so good for so many reasons, it changes how you feel physically as well as mentally – it increases self-esteem, energy levels and endorphins. It relieves stress and negative emotions, while improving body image, motivation, mental functioning and sleep.
Why not join Jemma for “Got 5 Live” on Instagram. It’s 5 mins of pulse-raising activity each day at 7am. Start your day in the right way!
What is your motto for life?
A little of what you fancy does you good
What is your current destination?
I am currently focussing on new some products and plans for Mummas Health Hub and also bringing new emerging health brands to Mums through events that I hold. Lots on and I’m very excited. It’s been a journey for me, I’m still learning, as I always wanted Mummas Health Hub to be a brand and a business as well as a safe place for Mums to come and take motivation and inspiration from.
What advice do you have for your 16-year old self?
You’re not fat, no-ones looking at you, you have time to discover things, you don’t have to do it all at once and you are allowed to change you mind, no one will judge you.
What three things are you most grateful for today?
Both my children and my husband. That’s a given really I suppose.
What are your natural highs?
My natural high is definitely exercise, I try my best to get out of breath everyday, even just for a few minutes, it really works, but also followed by a good night out with friends.
What gives your life balance?
I find it hard to unwind as I’m normally thinking about what I can do next, but I normally have a bath and read, whilst drinking red wine.
What makes you laugh?
Absurd TV comedies, I love The Might Boosh, Flight of the Concords, The League of Gentleman, Psychoville the weirder the better. I was raised on things like Monty Python, Black Adder and The Young Ones – I could watch them on repeat and still laugh.
What is your proudest achievement?
Firstly my boys, then it would be being brave enough to give up the routine of a 9-5 job to pursue a totally different career. I learn something new everyday about myself, and people around me.
Who in your life has influenced you the most?
Hmmm. I get influenced pretty easily! I’d say my parents, they were relaxed but encouraged me to try new things and if they don’t work, it’s ok, but you must not be scared to try. I always think life should be about collecting experiences, rather than a linear pathway to a ‘destination’ and I think they instilled that in me.
Which five people, living or dead, would you invite to a fantasy dinner party?
Oh good one. So Victoria Wood (one of my favs), Dave Grohl, (just seems so nice and good fun) Richard Branson (cliché I know, but I’d love to chat to him one day) Courtney Love, (I think she’d be fascinating) and Tim Minchin (I think he’s a genius and very funny)
Tell us something we don’t know about you?
Years ago I did a stand up comedy course and Mickey Flannigan was my teacher, the course ended in me performing a 10 minute stand up routine
