The Health and Mental Wealth 12 Month Challenge!

I’m a firm believer that psychology is for everyone. Through my work as a Clinical Psychologist, I see again and again how important a pro-active approach to mental health and happiness is. We all need to look after our minds in the same way we look after our bodies through eating well and going to the gym. Think of it as exercise for the mind!

This is why I was so happy to team up with Becks and Debs of Parent Apparel to be part of their Health and Mental Wealth Campaign to #thinkbetterfeelbetter.

The way you think and the day-to-day things you do are intrinsically connected to how you feel emotionally. When you do things that make you feel good and shift your mental focus to see what’s going well in your life it has a positive knock on effect on your mood.

It can be easy to get caught up in believing that it takes a big change to feel happy, such as a new job, car, partner, house or baby. But waiting for these things to happen can mean you put your life and happiness on hold and wish away the life your living. In truth, these things do not make as much a difference to your happiness as you’d think.

The reality is that it’s what you do everyday that makes a difference. If you want to make changes in your life so that you feel happier, it’s the small steps that really count. And the good news is that you can start with them straight away. And small steps can lead to big changes.

Becks and Debs had the brilliant idea of a wall planner as a way to put these ideas into action on an everyday basis. They gave me the challenge of coming up with 12 strategies to make you feel good – one for each month of the year.

Notice the Good
Good things are happening all of the time, but when life takes hold it can sometimes be difficult to give them the attention they deserve. We focus instead on the things we’re unhappy with, anxious about or finding difficult. It’s important to remember you have a choice in where you direct your attention – if you notice the everyday things that make you feel good (rather than waiting for the big things or wishing time away) it can make a real difference to your mood.

Laugh More
Laughter really is the best medicine – research shows that laughter soothes tension, improves your immune system and even eases pain. Life shouldn’t just be serious or about duties and responsibility, it’s important to make time for laughter and fun! It’s a brilliant way to boost mood, switch off and it’s even good for you brain. So when life gets to serious, make time for fun – it’s the perfect antidote!

Be Kind
Doing good for others is good for us to. It stimulates the release of endorphins, increases happiness and helps you remember that life is larger than you. Research shows that the good feelings you experience when helping others may be as important to your health as exercise and a healthy diet. Plus there’s a strong relationship between doing good and increased self-esteem and self-worth.
